About Us

Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI)

Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was founded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2000 with the mission of enhancing Hong Kong’s competitiveness through applied research. ASTRI’s core R&D competence in various areas is grouped under five Technology Divisions: Advanced Electronic Components and Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Trust Technologies, Communications Technologies, Innovative Mind, and IoT Sensing and AI Technologies. It is applied across six core areas which are Smart City, Financial Technologies, New Industrialisation and Intelligent Manufacturing, Digital Health, Application Specific Integrated Circuits and Metaverse.

Over the years, ASTRI has nurtured a pool of research, I&T talents and received numerous international awards for its pioneering innovations as well as outstanding business and community contributions. As of 2022/23, ASTRI has transferred more than 1,400 technologies to the industry and has been granted over 1,050 patents in the Mainland, the US, and other countries.

About SMTA

Launched by ASTRI in April 2023, the Smart Mobility Technology (C-V2X) Alliance (SMTA) aims to provide a networking and knowledge sharing platform for ecosystem stakeholders, from OEM companies, AV and EV companies, service and system providers to industry users from HK, Mainland China, in particular the GBA, and overseas in the smart mobility field to explore collaboration and technology commercialisation opportunities.

Contribute to developing Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology hub through fostering a vibrant technology ecosystem and facilitating more industry-academia-research collaboration in the areas of smart mobility.

Our Mission

Super-connector

Reinforce Hong Kong’s role as a “Super-connector” with respect to technology development and knowledge transfer.

Cross Communication

Smart Mobility Technology (C-V2X) Alliance (SMTA) is where we can lead and strengthen cross collaboration through exploring key technologies such as C-V2X, 5G, as well as to facilitate industry discussion on the required infrastructure to support its development.

Joint Collaboration

The alliance also focuses on gathering common obstacles and technology demands while discussing best practices which can contribute to the development of the industry and smart mobility in Hong Kong and the GBA.

Stakeholders

The alliance will enable members to engage with various types of stakeholders including industry, academia, research institutes and authorities in Hong Kong as well as the GBA, nourishing an ecosystem for innovation, collaboration, entrepreneurship and technology commercialisation.

Technology

ASTRI’s core Smart Mobility Technology Solutions / Use cases

Artificial Intelligence

ASTRI works on AI-driven 3D scene understanding and enable AI, visual-sensing capabilities for evolving next-generation smart roadside Infrastructure. It provides the real-time object recognition by ASTRI’s C-V2X Edge Software solution to detect imminent danger on roads and issue real-time alerts (like pedestrian crossing) to the respective drivers via C-V2X communications between vehicles and roadside infrastructure.

Internet of vehicle / things

ASTRI works on digital twin and it is a promising concept for tracking transportation systems condition and performance accumulately. Using real-time traffic data, actual physical traffic can be augmented with (offline) microscopic simulation approaches to create a detailed digital representation of physical traffic.

Digital twins

ASTRI works on digital twins and it is a promising concept for tracking transportation systems condition and performance accumulately. Using real-time traffic data, actual physical traffic can be augmented with (offline) microscopic simulation approaches to create a detailed digital representation of physical traffic.

VR/AR

ASTRI works on AR applications for vehicle examination, and an AR inspection and training platform. This innovation will transform the vehicle examination industry and also enable AR inspection and training across various sectors, contributing to digital transformation and the development of smart cities.”

Wireless Communications

ASTRI works on ultra-low latency C-V2X communication and 5G intelligence Solution and is an end-to-end 5G network solution, through its flexibility, low cost and ease of deployment, removes a traditional cost barrier to the industry looking to make the most of the 5G network.
